A device driver or a software driver is a specific type of computer software typically developed to allow interaction with hardware devices such as a mouse or a printer. This software causes an interface for communicating with the device through the specific computer “bus” or communication subsystem that the hardware is connected to. The software provides commands to and receives data from the device and, on the other end, the requisite interfaces to the operating system and software applications.
In plain English, a device driver is a program that allows various hardware to work on your system. The driver will allow your hardware to communicate with your operating system making the devices operable in the proper way. The user installs the driver and then the program allows the hardware to operate transparently without user input.
Computers and their operating systems cannot be expected to know how to control every device both now and in the future. To solve this problem, operating systems basically dictate how every type of device should be controlled. The device driver then translates these operating system mandated function cells into device specific calls. In theory, a new device which is controlled in a new manner should function correctly is a suitable driver is available. This new driver will insure that the device appears to operate as usual from the operating system’s point of view.
Depending on the specific computer architecture, drivers can be 8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit and more recently 64-bit. This corresponds directly to the way the operating system is set up for which those drivers were developed. For example, in 16-bit Windows 3.11, most drivers were 16-bits which most drivers for 32-bit Windows XP are 32-bit.
New computers will often have device drivers already loaded into the system to make it easier for the user to just open the box and use their new system. But if you should happen to buy a separate component for your system such as a joystick, you will most likely need to install a device driver. The driver will come with the system, usually on a storage device like a CD-ROM. They will give you instructions on how to install the software and it is really quite easy if you follow the directions.
You cannot operate your computer system with separate components like a mouse without a device driver for that mouse. If you find that any part of your computer is not running properly, you may need to update your device drivers. Simply go to the website of the manufacturer of your hardware and they will usually have updated drivers available free for download.

For an intermediate computer system build or in other name as Mid-Range build computer system, there are many different approach to build the system with a certain budget. It is where you have to decide what applications will be important to you. For some teenager, the gaming graphics performance is an important area, while others may need advance applications such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks and Adobe software applications. Few may need some boost in sound system and this depends on the soundcard and external speakers they will choose. Then also, the budget also one thing to consider, even you need a better performance than the budget build system. Otherwise, the cost will be near to High-end build system, but the real performance still on Mid-range.
For mid-range system build, usually a better graphic card, a nice speaker system, a reliable Power Supply Unit and a bigger RAM value would be worth to have.
Platform, Casing, PSU and CPU:
In terms of CPU selection, a Dual-Core CPU might be needed. It is up to choose between Intel’s Core 2 Duo or an AMD AthlonX2 3800+. Both will have almost the same gift. While, the motherboard may need some upgrade in the FSB up to 1000MHz at least. An SLI motherboard or Crossfire won’t be necessary as you will only run one graphic card on the motherboard. But for an advance performance graphic card will be huge in size and a bigger casing would be needed. Of course when you used a 1000MHz FSB motherboard, an upgrade VGA card and better CPU of Dual-Core, a sufficient Power Supply Unit (PSU) is a must. Graphics and Sound system:
This is the best part. Upon choosing a graphic card, you have to determine which level of graphic performance you need, the budget you have and the PSU on the motherboard. They are two types of main manufacturer for graphic card. These two is competing each other in the graphic manufacturing industry. They are Nvidia GeForce and ATi Radeon. Usually, the card with large fan, massive and thick heat sink would worth up to $150. And this selection should suitable with your existing PSU. Otherwise, it will be a waste where your graphic card will be burned out, or worse your motherboard will hunger lot of power consumption. Then you know what will happen.
For a nice sound on your ear, at least a 3D distribution sound system with noise reduction and a small subwoofer would be nice enough to make you sleep or watch Transformers transforming sound.
Memory and Hard Disk Drive:
At this system where your motherboard and graphic card is at high frequency, also the need for more memory consumption for your desktop applications, and a prevention of PC hang-up during playing games or applications, a high valued memory of RAM is needed. 1GB is the least you can put. Even so, sometime hang-up will happen by this value of RAM. So, the higher the better it would be. And for lots of applications to be installed, games and data such as music or video files, a 200GB of hard disk storage at least is maybe quite not enough. Perhaps you need more. It depends.
Optical Drive:
When it comes to optical drive, it really does not matter how much you pay for it. They pretty much do the same thing. Only recently, I found out there is a LightScribe DVD technology that allow user to print images and labels directly on a special LightScribe disks. I believe they are from ASUS’s technology. And for addition, an advance system may use high power consumption and releases lots of heat. Because of that, it is maybe the time for you to consider adding a fan or a heatsink on the place where the heat dissipated the most.
